Picking up my Ascaso Steel Duo from F'fax repairs on Saturday. The element had gone, which turns out to be quite an expensive repair. I often leave my machine on for a few hours at a time. Does anyone know if this could contribute to the element going or it was probably just age?

Hi Jackdiy,
It should be absolutely fine to leave your Ascaso Steel on for a few hours at a time. It really is the steam function that you have to be sure is turned off after use. I found a note on heating elements that should be of help:
"It is always advisable to run some water through the brew head straight away before making coffee. Hold a cup/container under the brew head without the filter holder fixed in the brew head and switch on the coffee switch and let water run through the brew head for about 5 to 10 seconds and again every time after using the steamer to froth milk not forgetting to turn off the steam switch after frothing milk.
This does not guarantee any amount of time that the element will last but carrying out these processes should help as this prevents the machine from heating up without any water in the element and could help prolong the life of the element itself."
Best,
Roberto

Thanks Roberto. Must have been age that caused the burn out as I hardly use the steam function. Either way I'll run water through the brewhead for 5-10 seconds when ever firing up the machine.
